Salix purpurea ‘Dicky Meadows’ is one of the most respected basketry willows in cultivation, valued for its slender, highly flexible rods, smooth texture, and consistently uniform growth. Favored by weavers for intricate baskets and garden structures, the rods emerge bright green and cure to a rich mid-brown finish. Hardy to USDA Zone 3+, this vigorous willow can reach up to 15 feet tall, with annual growth of 4–5 feet and even longer, straighter rods when coppiced annually. In winter, its yellow stems tipped with red add striking seasonal color and structure to the landscape. Naturally deer-resistant due to its bitter foliage, ‘Dicky Meadows’ is an excellent choice for basketry beds, living fences (fedges), and productive hedgerows where durability, performance, and beauty matter.
