Salix fragilis f. vitellina ‘Flame Yellow’ is a rare living willow prized for its exceptionally bright lemon-yellow stems, which glow in summer, shift to orange in fall, and deepen to red in winter. Stem color is strongly influenced by light and pruning, with the brightest color achieved through full sun in winter, partial sun in summer, and hard coppicing every 1–2 years. This fast-growing willow thrives in full sun with moist to average soils and performs especially well in wetter sites. Grown primarily for basketry and weaving, it produces long, flexible, and durable stems ideal for both beginner and experienced artisans, while also adding striking winter color to the landscape. We coppice this plant annually, so it has not flowered and its gender is unknown. Hardy to USDA Zone 3+, it is particularly well suited to colder climates.
