The Common Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a cold-hardy, tough native deciduous shrub valued for its adaptability, seasonal interest, and reliability in challenging conditions. Native to central and eastern North America, including the Chicago region, this shrub grows 5–8 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide (occasionally taller) and performs well in USDA Zones 2–8. In late spring (May–June), it produces showy pinkish-white flower clusters, followed by persistent reddish seed capsules that extend interest into summer. Mature plants are noted for their distinctive exfoliating bark, which peels in strips to reveal layered reddish to light brown tones, providing winter interest once foliage drops.
Thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts to most soils, including clay, wet, dry, rocky sites, and black walnut areas. Drought tolerant and tough, it’s ideal for hedges, erosion control, and native plantings; prune after flowering or rejuvenate in early spring.
